Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to retain Black Stars coach Otto Addo despite mounting criticism following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Addo has faced growing calls for dismissal after Ghana finished their AFCON qualifying campaign with just three points from six matches, marking the first time in two decades the Black Stars will miss the tournament. The team also struggled offensively, scoring only three goals in the campaign.

Speaking to Flashscore, Kingston acknowledged the disappointment and frustration among fans but argued that a managerial change at this stage could prove counterproductive.

“For me, at the moment, we shouldn’t change anything,” Kingston said. “I think Otto is even disappointed in himself. And I believe by now he’s asking himself questions about what really happened and what he can do to improve.”

The former midfielder stressed the importance of continuity, warning that replacing Addo and the technical team could destabilize the squad.

“If we change the coach and the technical team and bring new faces, it will be a disaster,” he stated.

Ghana remains in contention for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, currently joint top of their qualifying group with six matches remaining. Kingston believes Addo should be given the chance to lead the team through the qualifiers.

“I think we should allow him to at least finish the World Cup qualifiers – who knows? Maybe he can qualify,” Kingston added. “And then after that, we make a decision as a country.”

The GFA Executive Council is set to meet on Wednesday to evaluate the Black Stars’ performance and decide the future of Otto Addo’s tenure.
