Ghanaian rapper M.anifest has shared his thoughts on the defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 7, 2024 elections, attributing the loss to widespread dissatisfaction with the country’s governance.
Speaking to James Copnall on BBC Newsday on December 9, M.anifest, whose real name is Kwame Ametepee Tsikata, explained that the public felt the country was being “run down” under the NPP administration.
“When you ask me why they lost, I think it’s because the citizens weren’t happy with the state of the nation,” he said. “In local parlance, we say ‘show working’. People were unhappy that the country was not being run well, and I believe there is now an expectation of accountability from the new leadership, particularly from John Mahama, should he take office.”
M.anifest also discussed the growing desire for accountability among Ghanaians, particularly the youth, who have been vocal in their activism over the past few years. He pointed to protests against illegal mining and other issues as evidence of this shift. “Young people, who are most affected by issues like high unemployment, are finding their voices more frequently,” he said. “It’s not just about voting every four years; there’s a sense of everyday accountability now.”
The rapper further noted that discontent is not limited to the youth, with pensioners also taking to the streets in protest in recent years.
“People across various age groups have expressed their dissatisfaction,” M.anifest added, highlighting the urgency felt by citizens for real change.
