President John Dramani Mahama said Ghana’s longstanding ties with Lincoln University remain intact, despite the institution’s decision to withdraw an honorary doctorate it had planned to confer on him.
The Pennsylvania-based university canceled the award days before the scheduled ceremony following objections from within its community over Mr. Mahama’s perceived stance on LGBTQ issues.
Speaking Thursday during an engagement with members of the Ghanaian diaspora in Philadelphia, Mr. Mahama sought to downplay the dispute, emphasizing the historic relationship between Ghana and the university.
He noted that Lincoln University played a formative role in the life of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, describing the institution as central to the country’s intellectual and political heritage.
“Whatever disagreements have arisen, Lincoln University holds a special place in my heart,” Mr. Mahama said, adding that the university remains “an integral part” of Ghana’s history.
He said the recent controversy would not alter the broader relationship, which he indicated would continue to be viewed with respect in Ghana.
