In a move to strengthen Ghana’s education sector, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed an eight-member committee tasked with organizing the much-anticipated National Education Forum. This initiative follows Mahama’s pledge during his 2024 election campaign to engage the public in shaping the future of the country’s education system, with a particular focus on evaluating the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
The newly formed committee, chaired by Professor George K. T. Oduro, former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, has been given two weeks to submit its report and proposed plans. The committee’s members include prominent figures in the academic and education sectors, such as Professors Goski Alabi, Rosemary Bosu, and Smile Dzisi, along with Samuel Awuku, Ph.D., Kofi Asare, Stephen Owusu, and Inusah Shiraz.
With a clear mandate, the committee’s Terms of Reference (TOR) emphasize several key objectives: crafting a guiding theme, engaging diverse stakeholders, and creating a structured agenda for the forum. In addition to this, they are responsible for determining the event’s venue, date, budget, and setting up a secretariat.
Once the forum concludes, the committee will compile a comprehensive report, outlining the discussions and recommendations. The final outcome is expected to include a draft national education policy framework and a detailed action plan for potential reforms, due within three weeks after the forum.
Mahama’s administration is signaling a renewed commitment to reforming the country’s education system, one of the cornerstones of his election promises. With the committee’s expertise, many hope this forum will pave the way for actionable solutions to address the challenges facing Ghana’s educational landscape.
