President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Professor Nana Ama Klutse as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Presidency announced on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
Prof. Klutse, who currently heads the Department of Physics at the University of Ghana, is a prominent climate scientist and Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Working Group I. She brings a wealth of expertise in climate modelling and environmental science to the role, having contributed to key reports including the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report.
In a statement on social media, Prof. Klutse expressed her gratitude for the appointment and emphasized the pressing environmental challenges facing Ghana, including air quality issues, climate change, and waste management. She vowed to collaborate with various stakeholders to develop actionable solutions that promote environmental sustainability and public health.
A PhD holder in Climatology from the University of Cape Town, Prof. Klutse has extensive experience in climate research, focusing on the societal impacts of climate change. She has worked on several high-profile national and international projects, particularly in climate and health, and has co-authored numerous academic publications.
At the University of Ghana, she teaches courses on climate dynamics, atmospheric physics, and regional climate modelling, while also supervising graduate-level research. Prof. Klutse’s leadership at the EPA comes at a critical time as Ghana grapples with increasing environmental pressures.
