President John Dramani Mahama has expressed strong support for Dr. Johnson Asiama’s appointment as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), despite growing opposition from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over concerns about his legal history.

The endorsement comes as debates intensify regarding Dr. Asiama’s past involvement in the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank, which led to legal charges that were later dropped by the government. The NPP has voiced concerns that Dr. Asiama’s legal challenges could undermine the integrity required for the top position at Ghana’s central bank.

In the face of this opposition, President Mahama defended Dr. Asiama’s suitability for the role during a swearing-in ceremony for Dr. Asiama and Dr. Zakari Mumuni, who was appointed as First Deputy Governor. President Mahama stressed the need for experienced leadership to address the challenges facing Ghana’s struggling financial sector.

“Ghana’s financial sector is in crisis and the task ahead requires experience, foresight, and decisive leadership. With Dr. Asiama at the helm, I am confident we will rebuild trust in the Bank of Ghana, restore stability, and guide our economy back to sustained growth,” Mahama said.

The President further expressed trust in Dr. Asiama’s ability to serve with diligence and excellence, despite the ongoing controversy surrounding his past.
