John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the current government for allegedly mismanaging an $11.5 billion loan facility acquired over the past eight years.

During a special prayer service addressing the Muslim community at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in the Ashanti Region, Mahama emphasized that these funds, if properly utilized, could have been invested in transformative projects that would propel Ghana’s development to levels seen in cities like Dubai.

Mahama contrasted the government’s performance with his own tenure, highlighting that during his administration, a $3.5 billion loan was used to finance significant infrastructure projects. These included the expansion of Tema Harbour and the construction of Terminal 3 at Kotoka International Airport, initiatives aimed at enhancing national growth.

He stated, “President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo borrowed $11.5 billion within just five years. In contrast, during my presidency, we borrowed only $3.5 billion, yet we achieved substantial developmental projects. If I had borrowed $11.5 billion, Ghana would have been developed like Dubai.”
