President, John Dramani Mahama, has pledged six months of his salary to support a new medical initiative aimed at improving healthcare access across the country.
The donation, totalling GHC330,939.00, will go to the newly launched Ghana Medical Trust Fund—popularly known as Mahama Cares. The initiative was unveiled on Tuesday at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Mahama called on businesses and corporate institutions to support the fund as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts.
“I want to encourage corporate Ghana, businesses, the mines, the banks, and all the other companies, that this Ghana Medical Trust Fund is coming to your clients—people who save their monies in your banks or do business with you. Some of them are even your own staff,” he said.
The fund is expected to provide financial assistance for medical care to Ghanaians in need. Mr Mahama emphasised that donations to the fund would have a direct impact on communities and individuals across the country.
Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the donation in a Facebook post shortly after the event.
According to a 2020 report on emoluments for Article 71 Office Holders, the President’s monthly salary is pegged at GHC47,277.00. Multiplied over six months, the full donation amounts to GHC330,939.00.
The Mahama Cares fund is the latest in a series of efforts aimed at strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system through public-private partnerships and philanthropic contributions.
