President John Dramani Mahama has expressed disappointment after a letter from Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo regarding a petition for her removal surfaced on social media before it was delivered to him.
The Chief Justice had formally requested that President Mahama provide copies of the petitions submitted for her removal, allowing her seven days to review them and respond. The letter, dated 27 March 2025, was addressed to the President and the Council of State, seeking permission to review the documents before a potential Committee of Inquiry is established.
In her letter, Justice Torkornoo stated: “I respectfully request that copies of the petitions be forwarded to me, and that I be granted at least seven days to provide my response. This will allow my comments to be included in the consultations anticipated under Article 146(6), prior to the formation of a Committee of Inquiry under Article 146(7).”
This came two days after President Mahama forwarded three petitions, calling for her removal, to the Council of State for further consultation.
In response, Calistus Mahama, the Executive Secretary to the President, confirmed that the petitions, dated 14 February and 17 March 2025, had been sent to the Council of State for review. He also pointed out that the confidentiality of the proceedings under Article 146 was expected to extend to all related documents.
However, President Mahama expressed his disappointment that Justice Torkornoo’s letter had already been circulating on social media before he had the chance to review its contents. He also noted that the letter appeared to have been shared alongside other correspondence addressed to various legal bodies, including the President of the Supreme Court and the Ghana Bar Association.
