President John Dramani Mahama has taken decisive action to tackle Accra’s chronic flooding problem, forming a 7-member Anti-Flood Taskforce aimed at developing long-term solutions for the city’s water management challenges. The Taskforce, which began its work on March 12, 2025, is led by Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), Stanislav Xoese Dogbe.

The initiative comes as Accra faces increasingly severe flooding issues, particularly during the rainy season. Mahama has expressed his firm commitment to finding sustainable solutions, stating that the government is focused on addressing the root causes of the problem rather than just managing its symptoms.

“Our goal is clear: to prevent the recurring flooding disasters that have affected many communities in Accra,” Dogbe said. “We are committed to finding engineering solutions that will provide lasting relief for residents.”

The newly-formed taskforce is composed of key government officials and experts, including:

  1. Stanislav Xoese Dogbe – Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), Chair
  2. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei – Minister for Water Resources, Works & Housing
  3. Ahmed Ibrahim – Minister for Local Government
  4. DCOP Abdul Osman Razak – National Security Coordinator
  5. Teddy Addi – Deputy Director-General of NADMO
  6. Madam Marietta Brew – Legal Counsel to the President (Secretary to the Taskforce)

As part of their initial assessment, the Taskforce conducted aerial surveys of flood-prone areas like Weija, the Sakumo Ramsar Site, and the Tema Fishing Harbour. The aim of these reconnaissance missions is to gather critical data that will inform the development of long-term flood prevention measures.

In addition to the aerial surveys, the Taskforce will also carry out ground-level assessments to better understand the local factors contributing to the flooding and develop targeted strategies for mitigation.

With Accra’s flooding crisis continuing to disrupt daily life for thousands of residents, the formation of this Taskforce signals a focused and collaborative effort to create sustainable solutions and ensure the safety and well-being of the city’s inhabitants.
