President John Dramani Mahama has announced the formation of a seven-member committee to lead a National Economic Dialogue (NED), aimed at addressing Ghana’s pressing economic issues. This initiative is part of his 120-day Social Contract with the Ghanaian people, which seeks to lay the groundwork for long-term, sustainable development.
The NED Planning Committee will be chaired by Dr. Ishmael Yamson, a respected economist, and has been tasked with organizing a high-level dialogue to drive consultation and build consensus around key economic policies. The committee’s focus will be on transforming Ghana into a high-growth, inclusive, and resilient economy.
The committee, which has just four weeks to submit its report, will bring together experts from various fields. The full list of members includes Dr. K.Y. Amoako, Professor John Gatsi, Mohammed Samara, Nelly Mireku, Anthony Sarpong, and Ernest De-Graft Egyir.
In a statement issued on January 26, 2025, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to the President, explained the committee’s objectives, including providing a clear picture of Ghana’s economic situation to the public. “The NED will offer a platform for dialogue and consultation on the country’s pressing development challenges, discuss policy trade-offs, and build consensus on the reforms necessary for economic transformation,” the statement read.
The committee will also be responsible for developing a homegrown fiscal consolidation program, guiding national budgeting, and identifying structural reforms that will reset Ghana’s economy.
This initiative marks an important step towards addressing Ghana’s economic difficulties, from ensuring fiscal sustainability to fostering structural transformation and building resilience in the face of economic challenges.
