John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that he will only accept the results of the 2024 elections if the process is transparent and fair.
In an exclusive interview with BBC Africa’s Thomas Naadi, Mahama outlined that the credibility of the election would be a determining factor in his acceptance of the outcome.
When asked if he would accept the results regardless of the result, Mahama responded, “If on election day there is widespread ballot snatching, violence, military intimidation, shootings, and armed groups causing chaos, how can I accept that result? It will depend on the transparency and fairness of the process.”
Ghana’s general elections on December 7, 2024, are poised to be a crucial moment in the country’s democratic process. Voters will decide the next president and elect members of Parliament, with all 275 parliamentary seats up for contention. The elections are taking place amid ongoing economic challenges, including high inflation and rising unemployment.
The two leading political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), are engaged in a highly competitive race for power. The NPP’s candidate, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is campaigning with the slogan “It is possible,” highlighting digitalization and economic diversification as key pillars of his platform. In contrast, NDC’s John Dramani Mahama is advocating for policies such as a 24-hour economy and strengthened anti-corruption measures, including the implementation of recommendations from the Auditor General’s report.
