President John Dramani Mahama has launched an ambitious new agricultural initiative, signaling a strategic shift in Ghana’s economic development agenda. Dubbed the Feed Ghana Programme, the plan aims to overhaul the country’s agricultural sector and embed it at the core of national policy.
Speaking at a high-profile event in the agriculturally significant Bono East Region, Mr. Mahama characterized the program as a cornerstone of his broader Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA), designed to modernize farming practices, boost food security, and insulate the economy from global shocks.
“The time has come for bold and decisive actions,” Mahama told attendees in Techiman on Saturday. “We must no longer treat agriculture as an afterthought. Agriculture must be placed at the center of our national economic transformation.”
The Feed Ghana initiative consolidates various agricultural projects under a single umbrella, with a focus on increasing food production, advancing agri-tech, enhancing infrastructure, and establishing agro-industrial zones. It also reflects a broader recalibration of national strategy in response to geopolitical shifts triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Global protectionism is rising. Tariff wars are being waged among the world powers, and new trade tensions are emerging,” Mr. Mahama said, warning that Ghana must adapt to a more volatile international trading environment. “This is not just timely it’s imperative.”
By positioning agriculture as a lever for job creation and economic stabilization, Mahama is betting on a sector long seen as underperforming despite its centrality to Ghana’s workforce and rural livelihoods.
“It represents a bold commitment to put our resources where our ambitions lie,” he said, closing his address with a call for renewed investment and political will.
The initiative is expected to be a focal point of Mahama’s policy platform as he prepares for a potential return to the presidency in Ghana’s next election cycle.
