President John Dramani Mahama has called for an immediate investigation into the violent clash between military personnel and illegal miners at the AngloGold Ashanti mine in Obuasi, which resulted in the deaths of up to eight individuals. The incident has drawn widespread concern across the country, prompting swift action from the government.

In a statement, President Mahama expressed deep regret over the loss of life and emphasized the need for a thorough inquiry to understand the events leading to the conflict. The president assured the public that anyone found to have acted unlawfully would face legal consequences.

“The investigation will seek to clarify the circumstances surrounding the clashes and ensure those responsible are held accountable,” the statement said.

In addition to the investigation, the government has directed AngloGold Ashanti to cover medical expenses for the injured and assist with burial arrangements for the deceased.

The president has also instructed security forces to take decisive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) confirmed that its personnel returned fire in self-defense after illegal miners, armed with various weapons, attacked soldiers patrolling the mine on Saturday night. The GAF’s response followed an exchange of gunfire, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries among the illegal miners.
