President John Dramani Mahama has directed security services to deploy personnel to key markets across Ghana to address the rising number of fire outbreaks.
During a visit to traders at the fire-damaged Kantamanto Market, President Mahama assured the public of the government’s commitment to improving safety measures and addressing their concerns. He also instructed the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to station fire tenders at major markets to enable faster responses to emergencies and reduce potential damage.
The President also announced plans to install CCTV cameras in prominent markets as part of efforts to enhance security and deter potential arsonists.
“We held a meeting with security heads today to discuss how we can tighten security around major markets to prevent these incidents,” Mahama said. “We believe these fires, which predominantly occur at night, raise suspicions of deliberate acts. During the day, fires are rarely reported.”
He further called for fire tenders to be positioned near major markets at night to ensure swift action in the event of another outbreak.
