President John Dramani Mahama has directed a major expansion in recruitment across Ghana’s security services, doubling the planned intake from 20,000 to 40,000 personnel over the next four years in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s security infrastructure.
The directive came after a high-level meeting with heads of the security agencies, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak and Acting Defence Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, where officials reviewed the ongoing recruitment exercise.
According to a statement released Monday, March 16, the president was briefed on the progress of the process before instructing that the number of recruits be significantly increased to bolster the capacity of the country’s security institutions.
Mahama also stressed the importance of transparency and fairness in the recruitment process, urging security agency leaders to ensure that all qualified applicants are given equal opportunity.

The meeting brought together several key figures in Ghana’s national security leadership, including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, the Secretary to the President, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and the National Security Coordinator.
Also present were heads of the country’s major security institutions, including Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu, Ghana Prisons Service Director-General Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, the Director-General of the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service Comptroller-General Samuel Amadu and the Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission.
The expanded recruitment drive is expected not only to strengthen Ghana’s security services but also to create additional employment opportunities for thousands of young people hoping to join the sector.
