In response to reports of food shortages in senior high schools across Ghana, President John Mahama has announced a solution to address the crisis. Speaking during a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service in Accra on Sunday, January 12, Mahama revealed that food items, procured by the previous government to mitigate last year’s drought, are available at the Tema port and can be redirected to feed students.

“These food items were imported by the previous government to address the drought situation, but in light of the current emergency, we will use some of this food to ensure that education continues,” the president stated.

Mahama added that he has instructed his Chief of Staff to coordinate with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to facilitate the distribution of the food from warehouses in Tema.

The president reiterated his commitment to supporting the Free Senior High School programme, which was introduced by the previous government.

Meanwhile, the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) had earlier called on parents and guardians to assist with feeding students, as many schools faced difficulties in providing enough food due to financial constraints caused by the previous administration’s failure to release necessary funds.
