SPresident-elect John Mahama has vowed to launch an investigation into the deaths of several individuals during Ghana’s recent elections, if the outgoing government fails to do so.

The United States government had previously expressed concern over the reported deaths of four people during the elections. In a statement on December 10, 2024, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken extended condolences to the victims’ families and called for a thorough investigation into the incidents.

Mahama, speaking during a meeting with a European Union delegation, stated that his administration would hold those responsible accountable. “We are happy about the smooth, successful election we had, but unfortunately, a few incidents, including deaths, have marred it,” he said.

“We intend to investigate what led to the deaths, and if people are found culpable, they will face the full force of the law. If the outgoing government does not take action, we will do so as soon as we assume office,” Mahama added.
