President John Dramani Mahama has formally submitted three petitions calling for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to the Council of State for its advice, in accordance with the provisions of Article 146 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The petitions, lodged by various individuals, urge the President to take action against Torkornoo, although the specifics of the allegations remain undisclosed. The move triggers the constitutional process required for the potential removal of a sitting Chief Justice.
In line with constitutional protocol, President Mahama has sought the Council of State’s guidance on the matter. This development sets the stage for a legal review that could result in a judicial inquiry or even impeachment proceedings, should the Council’s recommendations warrant such actions.
The Council of State is now tasked with advising the President on the next steps, ensuring that any actions taken align with Ghana’s established legal and constitutional framework.
