President-elect John Dramani Mahama has emphasised his grounded approach to leadership, stressing that he remains unaffected by the allure of power or the transient nature of high office. Speaking at a Thanksgiving service at the Assemblies of God Church in Accra on Sunday, December 15, Mahama shared insights from his political journey and the lessons of humility he has learned along the way.
Mahama, who secured a resounding victory in the December 7 general elections, highlighted the importance of staying connected to the realities of leadership, even amid political success. He also called for unity and collective effort, urging Ghanaians to join him in addressing the challenges facing the nation.
Reflecting on his time out of office, Mahama recalled how he experienced the humbling loss of privileges after the 2016 elections. “When I lost in 2016, the Christmas hampers stopped coming. The many people who used to visit my house or seek a moment with me disappeared. It was only my family, closest friends, and church members who remained by my side,” he said.
He added, “For me, the trappings of power don’t get to my head. I understand that the praise and blessings people shower on you are temporary, often tied to the title of ‘president.’ One day, that title will be gone.”
Mahama expressed gratitude for the trust Ghanaians have placed in him and pledged to lead with humility and a renewed sense of purpose. He stressed that his victory in the 2024 elections was not about personal glory but a mandate to serve the country and work for its betterment.
