President John Dramani Mahama on Friday swore in Matilda Asante-Asiedu as the second deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana, reinforcing his administration’s push to restore credibility and competence to the country’s central banking system.
The ceremony, held at the Jubilee House and attended by members of the central bank’s board and senior government officials, comes as part of a broader institutional overhaul the Mahama administration says is aimed at promoting merit-based appointments and strengthening public trust.
“This event is more than just a procedural formality,” President Mahama said during brief remarks. “It reflects our collective resolve to restore professionalism, integrity, and competence to one of our nation’s most important institutions.”
Mrs. Asante-Asiedu, a seasoned banker with a background in financial inclusion and institutional reform, assumes office at a critical moment for Ghana’s economy. The central bank is currently navigating inflationary pressures and working to stabilize the local currency following a volatile period last year.
President Mahama credited the current central bank leadership for what he called early signs of recovery, citing moderating inflation and an appreciating cedi. “These gains reflect the impact of sound monetary policy and improved fiscal coordination,” he said.
