President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in seven new justices to Ghana’s Supreme Court, in a move aimed at bolstering the judiciary’s capacity to address an increasing volume of cases, including matters of constitutional and electoral significance.
The ceremony, held at the Jubilee House in Accra on Thursday, marks one of the largest single additions to the nation’s apex court in recent years.
The newly appointed judges — all promoted from the Court of Appeal — are:
- Justice Senyo Dzamefe
- Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
- Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
- Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
- Justice Philip Bright Mensah
- Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
- Justice Hafisata Amaleboba
Their appointments follow rigorous vetting and approval by the Appointments Committee of Parliament, in line with Article 144 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. The process involved recommendations from the Judicial Council, consultation with the Council of State, and final confirmation by Parliament.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, President Mahama underscored the judiciary’s essential role in safeguarding democratic governance and the rule of law. He urged the new justices to carry out their duties with integrity, impartiality and a commitment to justice.
“The people of Ghana are counting on you to defend their rights, uphold the Constitution, and administer justice without fear or favour,” the President said.
