President-elect John Dramani Mahama has acknowledged the significant challenges ahead in restoring Ghana’s economy, urging the United Nations (UN) for continued support.

In a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator Charles Abani on December 11, Mahama said that while the task would not be easy, his administration would work quickly to meet the high expectations of the Ghanaian people.

“I don’t kid myself that it is going to be an easy task, it is going to be quite tough,” Mahama said, adding that the victory margin was greater than expected, indicating the public’s high hopes for his leadership.

Abani, who visited Mahama to congratulate him on his election victory, assured the incoming president of the UN’s full support. He also congratulated Mahama on Ghana’s first female vice president, noting the country’s importance in upholding democracy and peace in West Africa.

“Our real purpose here is to congratulate you for your victory and thank you for the way you led your party to a successful, peaceful election,” Abani said. “The UN stands fully with you and fully with Ghana, and we look forward to collaborating with your government.”

In response, Mahama highlighted the long-standing relationship between Ghana and the UN, emphasizing the need to strengthen cooperation in light of the economic and social challenges the country faces. He referred to ongoing discussions with the World Bank and the IMF and stressed the importance of addressing Ghana’s debt repayment issues to avoid further economic turmoil.

Mahama also raised concerns about the erratic rainfall patterns over the past five years, which could affect food availability, and expressed a desire to work with UN agencies such as UNICEF and UNHCR to address these challenges.

“As we work to put Ghana back on its feet, we look forward to engaging with you to tweak existing programmes to meet the realities of today,” he said.
