Mahama to Labour: Ghana is now a crime scene

President John Mahama has delivered a scathing critique of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, accusing it of “criminally mishandling” Ghana’s economy.

Speaking at a National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Mahama expressed his disbelief at the extent of economic mismanagement under the previous government.

“We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I’m uncovering are shocking,” Mahama said. “Ghana is now a crime scene because of how recklessly the economy has been handled.”

President Mahama’s remarks came amid the government’s announcement of a 10% increase in base pay for public sector workers, effective March 2025, a second pay adjustment in less than a year. The previous increase, approved in 2024, was a 23% raise aimed at addressing the rising cost of living.

Rashid Pelpuo, Ghana’s Minister of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, revealed that the pay rise would take effect on March 1, 2025. This increase follows ongoing negotiations between the National Tripartite Committee (NTC), which comprises government, employers, and organized labor representatives.

These discussions have focused on setting the minimum wage for 2025 a crucial benchmark that will influence wages across sectors, especially for low-income workers.

The final decision on the minimum wage will also inform future discussions on public sector pay, with more negotiations to follow.
