President John Dramani Mahama has announced a bold new initiative to tackle the rising costs of treating chronic illnesses in Ghana. During his “Thank You Tour” of the Central Region on February 6, Mahama revealed plans to launch the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, better known as Mahama Cares. The fund is designed to offer financial assistance to individuals suffering from chronic conditions such as kidney and liver diseases, high blood pressure, and heart problems.
In his address, Mahama emphasized the importance of making healthcare more affordable and accessible for all Ghanaians. “We’ll continue improving our hospitals and healthcare system to ensure that everyone has access to the care they need,” he said. Mahama Cares is part of his broader strategy to reduce the financial burden on people living with long-term health issues.
Additionally, Mahama shared plans to reform the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by uncapping the National Health Insurance Levy. This would direct the full amount of the levy to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), allowing the Authority to cover treatment costs at healthcare facilities for NHIS cardholders.
“These changes will ensure that Ghanaians get the care they deserve, without the financial hardship,” Mahama said. His initiative underscores a growing recognition of the need to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system and make essential treatment more accessible to the public.
