President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans for a flagship initiative called the Blackstar Experience, aimed at positioning Ghana as the gateway to Africa for the global diaspora.
Speaking during his State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, Mahama explained that the programme, which is outlined in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 manifesto, will feature a range of cultural, historical, and creative arts events. These will be organized in collaboration with the private sector, diplomatic missions, and various government bodies.
“The Blackstar Experience will include a variety of activities such as street carnivals, concert party competitions, film events, and fashion festivals,” Mahama said. “We aim to position the Blackstar Experience as a uniquely Ghanaian tourism brand.”
A key component of the initiative will be the Pan African Month, which will encompass a diverse mix of activities, including a film week, food fair, theatrical performances, and monthly tourism promotions showcasing domestic destinations.
In addition to the Blackstar Experience, Mahama announced the appointment of Ghanaian musician and entrepreneur Rex Owusu Marfo, also known as Rex Omar, as the Presidential Staffer for the initiative.
The President also outlined plans to develop Osu Castle, the former seat of government, into a major tourist attraction. “We will develop the Osu Castle and its surrounding area, creating a pedestrian precinct with arts and crafts markets, jewelry, and gold markets. This 22-acre site will become a key destination for tourism,” he said.
Mr. Mahama further emphasized the government’s commitment to diversifying Ghana’s tourism offerings, particularly through the promotion of meetings, conferences, and exhibitions tourism. “Ghana’s peaceful and democratic environment makes it an ideal hub for international summits, business conventions, and high-profile events. We must leverage this unique advantage,” he added.
The President also promised the resumption of work on the Marine Drive Project in Accra, which is expected to enhance the city’s appeal as a top global tourist destination.
