John Dramani Mahama has called for stronger global cooperation and fairer access to resources, saying a healthy and thriving Africa would benefit the entire world.

Speaking as co-chair of the high-level segment of the One Health Summit in Lyon on Tuesday, he highlighted inequalities in global health preparedness and resource distribution.

“Countries that are most at risk have the least resources to cope. This must change,” he said.
Mahama stressed that improving health outcomes across Africa would have global advantages, adding that “a healthy and thriving Africa is no threat to anyone” but rather “a positive force for global progress”.

He also called for more equitable access to financing, technology, data and innovation to strengthen health systems in vulnerable regions, alongside increased research and knowledge-sharing.

The Ghanaian leader urged stronger political commitment to accelerate reforms, noting that progress in building the necessary infrastructure had been slow.

“Let Lyon be the turning point,” he said.
The summit brings together global leaders, policymakers and health experts to address shared challenges such as disease prevention, environmental risks and global health security.
