President John Dramani Mahama has called on leaders to be mindful of the consequences their decisions have on citizens’ lives.
Speaking at a tribute for the late CEO of KAMA Group of Companies, Nana Dr. Agyekum Addo, Mr. Mahama highlighted the far-reaching effects of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) introduced by the previous government. He noted that the initiative had a devastating impact on many, including Dr. Addo, and left thousands of Ghanaians suffering.
“His death was a shock to me, but it also serves as a reminder that the decisions we make as leaders affect many people,” Mahama said. “The bond exchange story of Dr. Addo was well-known, but many others have also been impacted. Older citizens, in particular, have seen their pension funds and savings eroded, and some have passed away or are living in poverty, unable to afford even basic necessities.”
President Mahama stressed the importance of prioritising the welfare of ordinary citizens when making policy choices, emphasising that “decisions affect lives.”
In his remarks, the former president also offered his condolences to the grieving family, urging them to take comfort in the lasting legacy Dr. Addo left behind.
