President John Dramani Mahama on Friday urged newly commissioned officers of the Ghana Armed Forces to commit themselves to a life of integrity, discipline, and selfless leadership, as the nation looks to them to safeguard its peace and stability.
Addressing graduates at a commissioning ceremony held at the Ghana Military Academy in Teshie, President Mahama—who serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces—called on the cadets to rise to the weight of expectation that comes with wearing the uniform.
“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in your lives,” Mahama told the graduating class. “You are no longer cadets; you are officers of the Ghana Armed Forces. The nation looks to you with hope and confidence.”
The ceremony, attended by senior military officers, government officials, diplomats, and families of the graduates, marked the formal induction of the cadets into the officer corps. The event featured traditional military drills and parades, underscoring the discipline and ceremonial customs of the armed forces.
Mahama, who has consistently championed military professionalism during his presidency, emphasized that leadership within the armed forces should be grounded not in authority or rank, but in responsibility, ethics, and service to country.
“Leadership is not about privilege—it is about responsibility,” he said. “Live with integrity, courage, and compassion. Be the kind of officers who inspire loyalty and earn respect through your actions.”
The president underscored the Armed Forces’ vital role in preserving national stability and regional peace, noting that those entrusted with command must reflect the highest standards of conduct.
“The Ghana Armed Forces is a pillar of our national stability,” Mahama said. “Its future rests on your shoulders.”
The commissioning ceremony comes at a time when West Africa faces mounting security challenges, including terrorism, political instability, and transnational crime, raising the stakes for a new generation of military leaders.
