President-elect John Dramani Mahama has urged the Transition Team to ensure full transparency and accountability as it prepares to take over power from the current administration. His call follows allegations of last-minute government recruitments and the disbursement of GH₵240 million to a business partner of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
In a joint meeting on Wednesday, December 13, Mahama raised concerns about the potential financial and operational impact of recent government actions on the incoming administration.
“There have been signals regarding last-minute contracts that could commit the new government. I hope the joint transition team will address these issues. There are also mass recruitments across various agencies that could become a liability for the new administration,” he said.
However, Fatimatu Abubakar, a spokesperson for the government’s transition team, dismissed the allegations, expressing surprise at the comments. She said, “I was shocked when I heard those remarks. I searched online to find any official statements but realised that some meetings had been misrepresented.”
Abubakar emphasized the commitment of both President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Mahama to ensure a smooth transition. She also pointed out that appointments, such as the CHRAJ and NCCE heads, were made as late as December 20, 2016, without controversy.
She further questioned the intent behind the allegations, suggesting they could stoke unnecessary panic and potentially lead to unrest. “There has been no new recruitment since the election,” she added.
