The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has closed the McDan Aviation Private Jet Terminal over an outstanding debt exceeding $3 million. The debt, which includes unpaid land leases, rentals, and terminal charges, was not cleared despite a deadline of Christmas to settle the amount.

This marks the second closure for McDan Aviation, which previously faced a shutdown in February 2022. GACL suspended the company’s operations at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport (KIA) due to operational breaches. McDan had launched its private jet services at the airport without meeting the necessary requirements, prompting GACL to bar the company from using the terminal.

In a letter dated January 31, 2022, GACL’s Managing Director, Yaw Kwakwa, informed McDan Aviation that it had failed to comply with terms for using the terminal as a private jet facility. The company was ordered to cease operations and hand over the terminal’s keys for inventory by the close of business on the same day.

The shutdown was preceded by a boycott of McDan Aviation’s private jet terminal launch event on January 28, 2022, by key figures in the aviation sector, including Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah and senior GACL officials. Despite ongoing issues with its operations, McDan’s failure to resolve its debt has led to the latest closure.
