The Electoral Commission (EC) has instructed the resumption of the collation process for the Ablekuma North election results at the Greater Accra Regional Collation Centre, following growing tensions at the site.
Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had gathered outside the centre, raising concerns of attempts to interfere with the electoral process. Inside, a tense standoff developed between NDC and New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidates, both sides accusing each other of undermining the people’s vote.
Earlier in the day, the collation process had been halted for the second time, with results from 219 out of 281 polling stations already collated. The initial suspension took place on Monday midway through the process.
EC Chairperson Jean Mensa had previously suspended the resolution of nine parliamentary disputes across the country. However, Peter Otokunor, the NDC’s former Deputy General Secretary, told JoyNews that the EC Chairperson intervened, instructing officials to continue with the collation process.
As a result, officials have returned to the centre to continue tabulating the figures. Despite this, confusion among party representatives persists, leading to heated exchanges and some damage to the venue’s louver blades.
Meanwhile, a large crowd of NDC supporters remains outside, calling for the immediate release of the results. To maintain order, the military has been deployed to support the police and ensure calm in the area.
