The National Election Security Task Force has confirmed the deployment of military personnel to assist the police in securing collation centres as the Electoral Commission (EC) prepares to resume the collation of results for outstanding constituencies from the December 7 elections.
The move follows criticism from the EC, which had earlier accused the security task force of failing to provide adequate protection during the initial stages of the collation process. The lack of security led to the abrupt suspension of the exercise.
On December 20, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs for the Ghana Police Service and spokesperson for the election security task force, addressed the media, stressing the importance of maintaining order at the collation centres.
She urged political leaders to avoid encouraging supporters to gather at these locations, warning that such actions could inflame tensions and undermine the integrity of the process.
“The joint police-military deployment will ensure a secure environment for the EC to complete the collation exercise without further disruptions,” ACP Ansah-Akrofi said, adding that only individuals accredited by the EC would be allowed access to the centres.
She called on all stakeholders to cooperate with security personnel and uphold the principles of peace and democracy throughout the election process.
The Task Force also reminded political parties to refrain from actions that could disturb the process, affirming its commitment to safeguarding the peace and security of the country.
