Military personnel have been observed at the Weija ITS polling station in Accra on December 7, 2024, despite prior assurances from security forces that the military would not be deployed at polling centres during Ghana’s general election.

The unexpected appearance of armed forces has sparked confusion among voters and election observers, with many questioning the consistency of the security arrangements, which had been outlined by the authorities in the lead-up to the vote.

Earlier, the Ghana Police Service had reassured the public that only police and other authorised security personnel would be present at polling stations to maintain law and order. However, the sighting of military personnel at the Weija station has led to concern over potential deviations from these plans.

Election officials have yet to issue a statement regarding the military presence, while the police have confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation.

Voters in the area have expressed mixed reactions. Some have voiced unease about the presence of the military, while others have remained calm, placing their trust in the authorities to ensure the integrity of the election process.
