The National Service Authority (NSA) has announced plans to roll out basic military training for all National Service Personnel (NSPs) beginning in August 2025, as part of a new government initiative aimed at instilling discipline, patriotism and physical fitness among Ghana’s graduates.
The programme, known as the National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme (NSERRP), is being developed in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces. High-level discussions between the NSA and military officials were held on Wednesday, 23 April.
The initiative stems from President John Dramani Mahama’s broader vision to strengthen national values through service, first outlined during his maiden State of the Nation Address to Parliament in February.
Speaking at the meeting, NSA Director-General Felix Gyamfi described the programme as a key step toward youth development and a national reorientation.
“This military training is a step in the right direction and must be embraced by all as a necessary measure to reset the country, particularly its youth,” he said.
Mr Gyamfi confirmed that participation in the training would be mandatory for all service personnel and would include basic drills and orientation exercises to foster civic responsibility and a spirit of national service.
Brigadier General Amoah-Boakye, who represented the Ghana Armed Forces at the meeting, said the military is fully committed to supporting the programme and stands ready to provide the necessary training.
The first cohort of personnel is expected to begin the two-month training programme on 3 August 2025.
