The Minority in Parliament has accused Attorney General Dominic Ayine of misusing his office by orchestrating raids, arrests, and investigations aimed at former government officials. The caucus contends that Ayine’s actions are undermining the fundamental role of his office, which is to provide legal advice to investigative bodies and assist the courts in administering justice.
During a press conference on March 24, Second Deputy Minority Whip Jerry Ahmed Shaib criticized the Attorney General’s approach, arguing that Dr.Ayine had shifted from his duty as a legal advisor to acting as an investigator and adjudicator. “The Attorney General is supposed to assist the court in dispensing justice based on evidence presented by investigators, not conduct his own inquisition and impose his judgment on the court,” Mr. Shaib remarked.
Mr.Shaib further warned that the current conduct could erode the integrity of the Attorney General’s office and weaken the justice system. He called on all stakeholders to demand an end to what he described as an overreach by the Attorney General.
The Minority also pointed to a recent raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison, which reportedly led to an apology from the National Security Coordinator. They questioned the legality of the operation, highlighting concerns such as the lack of a court-issued warrant presented to Dr. Addison, the excessive force used on his private security, and the removal of CCTV equipment.
“If the operation was lawful, why the apology?” Shaib asked. “If their actions were above board, there would have been no need for any apology from the National Security Coordinator.” The Minority is now calling for greater transparency in the enforcement of such operations.
