The Minority in Parliament has accused President John Mahama of breaching the Presidential Office Act by making appointments to his office without consulting the Council of State, as required by law.
Under Section 4(1) of the Presidential Office Act, the President is mandated to consult the Council before making such appointments. However, the Minority argues that, despite the Council of State not being in place, the President has already made these appointments without indicating they are provisional.
Patrick Boamah, the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, spoke on behalf of the Minority on Wednesday, 22 January, calling on the President to revoke the appointments and follow the correct legal procedures. “The appointment of the Cabinet Secretary was not made in accordance with the constitution. We are asking that the proper procedures be followed,” Boamah said.
The Minority also raised concerns about the recent appointment of an envoy to the Sahel region, questioning the basis for Ghana’s involvement with countries in the area. The opposition noted that, as a member of ECOWAS, Ghana has no historical ties to the Sahel states and expressed concerns over a potential shift in the country’s foreign policy.
“Ghana is a non-aligned nation with respect to the Sahel nations, so we want to understand the rationale behind this foreign policy shift,” the Minority stated.
