The Minority in Parliament has issued a stern warning, threatening to stage protests and withdraw cooperation in legislative affairs if President John Mahama does not address what they described as escalating lawlessness by alleged NDC thugs.
The warning follows a series of violent incidents reportedly perpetrated after Mahama’s recent swearing-in.
Second Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, highlighted the growing unrest, accusing supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of engaging in post-election violence, including the destruction of state property.
The Minority claims these actions are part of a coordinated effort to prevent the Electoral Commission (EC) from officially declaring the Ablekuma North parliamentary results in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“To President Mahama, we call on you to take immediate steps to call your party’s thugs to order. You cannot pretend to be unaware of all the lawlessness and violence in this country. We also call on the Ghana Police Service, the IGP and the Election Security Taskforce to rise to the occasion and enforce law and order without hesitation,” Shaib stated.
He warned that failure to do so would result in protests and a withdrawal of the Minority’s cooperation in parliamentary proceedings.
“We hereby serve notice that should the president, who is the Commander-in-Chief, fail to take steps to protect ordinary citizens, we, the Minority Caucus, shall protest through lawful means and withdraw our cooperation in Parliament,” the lawmaker added
