Members of Ghana’s parliamentary opposition staged a protest march to the national police headquarters Wednesday, demanding swift action over what they describe as an unconstitutional delay in announcing election results for the Ablekuma North constituency.

Led by Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the lawmakers submitted a formal petition to Inspector General of Police George Akuffo Dampare, urging law enforcement to ensure the Electoral Commission can safely release the outcome of the parliamentary race, which remains undeclared nearly six months after the December 2024 general elections.
“This delay constitutes a serious violation of the constitutional right to representation under the 1992 Constitution,” Annoh-Dompreh told reporters outside the police headquarters. He added that the absence of a declared Member of Parliament for the area undermines both democratic accountability and public trust in electoral institutions.
The Electoral Commission has not publicly stated the reason for the delay. Ablekuma North, a high-stakes swing seat in the Greater Accra Region, has historically seen close contests between Ghana’s two main political parties.
The protest highlights growing tension over electoral transparency and institutional credibility in the aftermath of a tightly contested national vote.
