The Minority in parliament has strongly criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s recent decision to revoke public sector jobs, accusing him of exacerbating unemployment and undermining economic stability.
During a press conference on March 3, former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adams condemned the move, referring to Mahama as “Terminator 1,” a moniker he claimed reflects the President’s pattern of terminating jobs for young Ghanaians without creating lasting employment opportunities.
Dr. Adam argued that the practice of dismissing workers only to replace them later did not constitute genuine job creation, as Mahama’s policies, particularly initiatives like “nkoko nkitinkiti,” fail to address the root causes of youth unemployment.
“Firing people from their jobs and replacing them later does not amount to creating new jobs. Ghanaians need actual, sustainable employment opportunities,” Dr. Adam stated. He also criticized Mahama for inflating employment statistics by replacing dismissed workers with new hires.
Highlighting what he perceived as double standards, Dr. Adam recalled Mahama’s defense of an outgoing administration’s right to make appointments until midnight on January 7, 2017, shortly before his own term ended.
He warned that the ongoing job cuts would only worsen the country’s unemployment crisis, which Mahama had previously promised to address, and described the dismissals as condemning thousands to further hardship.
