West Ham United midfielder Mohammed Kudus has explained the meaning behind his unique goal celebration during Saturday’s Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion.

After Brighton took the lead through Mats Wieffer in the 51st minute, Kudus leveled the score just seven minutes later with a close-range header. Following his goal, the Ghanaian international made a striking gesture by pulling out an elephant stool from the sidelines and sitting on it, accompanied by teammate Crysencio Summerville.

Kudus revealed that the stool, which is symbolic of Ghanaian culture, represents authority and kingship. “This is a stool from Ghana. The chiefs sit on it, so it is very special. It shows authority and kingship, so I thought why not do something different?” he said in a post-match interview with West Ham United.

The 24-year-old also acknowledged the growing popularity of his previous celebrations, which involved sitting on a steward’s seat or the stadium hoarding. “There are a lot of people sitting on the board now, and there’s a lot of conversation about it,” Kudus explained. “So when I bring out my stool now, this is mine, and nobody can do it.”
