A 21-year-old mobile money vendor was fatally shot Wednesday evening in a suspected robbery at Quarters Junction, a neighborhood in the Ngleshie Amanfro area of the Ga South Municipality, about an hour outside the capital.
The victim, Desmond Adzah, was ambushed around 7:00 p.m. while walking home from his mobile money kiosk, according to the police and eyewitness accounts. He was shot multiple times by unidentified assailants and later died at the Ngleshie Amanfro Polyclinic while receiving treatment.
The killing has rattled the local community, where Adzah was a familiar figure. “Desmond is known to all of us at the junction,” said Ruben Kumor, an eyewitness who spoke to Citi News. “Just after he had closed for the day, I asked him for a cash withdrawal, but he said he was out of money. Moments later, I heard gunshots.”
According to Kumor, residents were too frightened to intervene. “There’s a police station nearby, but night patrols are rare,” he said. “Even assigning community officers—what we call ‘baby police’—would help. Desmond’s death highlights how unsafe it’s become.”
Family members believe the attack may have been premeditated. Erica Adzah, the victim’s sister, told the media that she suspects Desmond was followed by individuals he knew.
“This was not a random shooting,” she said. “We believe he recognized the attackers. After they took his bag, they killed him—possibly because he had seen their faces.”
She added that Desmond attempted to reach their family home after being shot, but ongoing gunfire prevented relatives from responding.
The incident comes amid growing public concern over violent crime in parts of Greater Accra. Ghanaian authorities have yet to announce any arrests, though an investigation is ongoing.
Mobile money operations have become a common target for robbery in Ghana, as vendors typically carry large sums of cash. Calls for enhanced police presence and community safety measures continue to intensify in the wake of the attack.
