The mother of three school children captured on CCTV footage stealing GHC 35,000 from a popular supermarket in Takoradi have returned GHC 31,000 upon arrest.

The children, after interrogation confessed to handing over the money to their mother.

Their mother (name withheld) a trader revealed that she was in the market when her children brought the money. She is, however, unable to account for the remaining GHC4,000.

According to the Manager of the company who refused to speak to us on record, the GHC 31,000 has been handed over to the police who are currently investigating the matter. He claims they will only accept the money when the remainder is added.

Three kids aged 4, 10, and 16 were grabbed after CCTV footage captured them stealing thirty-five thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC 35,000) from the supermarket on December 2.

The 16-year-old is reported to be a first-year student in one of the Senior High Schools in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis. Footages from a CCTV installed in the supermarket reveal how the three kids made away with the money.

They entered the supermarket under the pretense of buying ice cream. The ten-year-old, realizing one of the cashiers had taken a break, started stealing from the shelf where the day’s sales had been kept.

After filling his pocket, he went out with his siblings to get a rubber bag. They filled the rubber bag with money and later bolted from the shop.

“I supply goods regularly to the supermarket and I realized one of the cashiers looked worried so I decided to find out what was wrong. She then confessed that about GHC 35,000 was missing from her sales. I looked at the CCTV footage and saw three children in school uniforms entering the shop. The ten-year-old went straight to where the sales were kept and started looting whilst his other siblings pretended to be buying ice cream. He filled his pocket and went out to get a rubber bag, he looted everything and bolted with his siblings”, Mr. Kwaku Tando, a supplier who witnessed the incident indicated during an interview in the presence of the Manager of the supermarket.

Although the Manager confirmed the incident to Connect FM, he declined to speak on record.

Mr Tando added that after capturing the school crest of the pupils, he headed to one of the Senior High Schools in the metropolis and identified the teenager among them. After interrogations, she led him to the school her siblings attend, where they all confessed the stealing money from the supermarket.

“After they were grabbed, they confessed to handing over the money to their mother. She was also picked up and GHC31,000 has been retrieved. We are still waiting for the rest of the money, but the police are currently handling the case”, he added.
