Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has mandated the immediate transfer of all police commanders stationed in mining regions as part of a broader initiative to combat illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.

The move is aimed at addressing the environmental damage caused by unlawful mining activities, which have severely affected the country’s water bodies and agricultural lands.

In a statement made during an engagement with Imams and Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi, Mr.Mubarak highlighted the government’s determination to take decisive action against the practice. “I have instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to replace all police commanders in mining areas with immediate effect,” he said. “Any regional, divisional, or district commander serving in these areas will be reassigned.”

Mr.Mubarak added that the newly appointed officers would be closely monitored and evaluated on their performance. “If they do not deliver results within three months, they will be transferred,” he stated. “We will continue making changes until we achieve tangible progress in curbing illegal mining.”
