Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has pledged a sweeping operation to remove beggars and street prostitutes from major cities, describing the situation as a threat to national security.

During a visit to Tamale in the Northern Region on Thursday, Mr. Muntaka announced that the government, in partnership with security agencies, is set to launch a nationwide initiative targeting five urban centres, including the capital Accra and Tamale.

Speaking at the commissioning of a new 24-unit apartment block for the Ghana Immigration Service, the minister said recent operations in Accra had resulted in the arrest of over 2,000 foreign beggars, with nearly half already repatriated. The remainder, he added, would be processed for removal by the end of the week.

Mr. Muntaka also issued a stern warning to individuals engaged in sex work on the streets, stating they too would be removed and sent back to their home countries.

“The beggars are not just a nuisance but a threat to our national security,” he said. “We will not rest until we have cleared them all, including the prostitutes parading on our streets. They must leave voluntarily or be forced out.”

The minister’s remarks form part of broader government efforts to improve public order and sanitation in urban areas.
