The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the family of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings have laid wreaths in his honour, marking four years since his passing. Rawlings, who led Ghana for nearly two decades, passed away on 12 November 2020 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness, just weeks after the burial of his mother, Victoria Agbotui.

The event, held at the NDC headquarters in Adabraka, saw members of the party, supporters, and family gathering to pay their respects. Wreaths were laid on behalf of Rawlings’ family, the NDC, and the party’s cadre corps who had supported the party’s early days.

Kofi Attoh, Special Assistant to the Speaker of Parliament and a member of the NDC cadres, revealed that there are moves to designate Rawlings’ birthday as a commemorative day at the party level. He shared that a proposal has been submitted to the NDC’s National Executive Committee (NEC), which is expected to consider it in January.

“We need to do more to recognize him,” Attoh said. “We need to have a day, preferably his birthday, as a holiday for the party to celebrate him.”

Kofi Adams, MP for Buem and former aide to Rawlings, paid tribute to the former president, praising his commitment to governance and encouraging party members to uphold his values as the NDC looks toward a potential return to power.

Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, MP for Korle Klottey and Rawlings’ daughter, also spoke at the ceremony, expressing her disappointment at the environmental degradation occurring across the country. Reflecting on her father’s legacy, she emphasized his dedication to protecting Ghana’s natural resources.

“We should be celebrating today, but how can we when the very things he stood for are being destroyed before our eyes?” Zanetor said, noting that the late president would be disheartened to see Ghana’s water bodies and forests in their current state.

Jerry John Rawlings remains a significant figure in Ghana’s history, having served as the longest-standing president and leading the nation through a transition to democratic governance.
