The National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Friday denied receiving GHC8 million (approximately $670,000) from the National Signals Bureau (NSB) ahead of the 2024 general elections, rejecting allegations stemming from a leaked memo attributed to a former intelligence chief.

The memo, reportedly authored by Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director of the NSB, was addressed to the National Security Coordinator. In it, Adu-Boahene claimed that more than GHC8 million was distributed to opposition parties for the procurement of logistics and equipment used in election collation processes. The NDC was not explicitly named, but the implication has fueled political controversy.

Adu-Boahene, who is currently facing charges for the alleged misappropriation of GHC49 million, insists the funds were used for covert national security operations. He further alleged that his prosecution is politically motivated, accusing Ghana’s Attorney General of pursuing what he described as a “malicious prosecution.”

Responding to the allegations, the NDC publicly distanced itself from any financial dealings with the NSB. Speaking on  Joy News, Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, the party’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated.

“My opponent would give me resources to defeat him in an election? Does that make sense?” Dr. Tanko said. “This is a distraction. We ran our campaign independently, with our own resources.”

The NDC has called for greater transparency in the handling of state funds and pressed authorities for clarification on how the alleged disbursements were authorized and accounted for. Party officials insist they remain committed to lawful and transparent political practices.

Dr. Tanko further criticized other opposition parties, accusing them of covertly aligning with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). “We have nothing to do with this. The NDC has always stood apart,” he said.

The case against Adu-Boahene, which centers on the alleged diversion of public funds under the guise of intelligence operations, is expected to proceed in the coming weeks. Political observers say the outcome could have broad implications for Ghana’s security institutions and their perceived involvement in electoral politics.
