NDC Rejects EC’S Rerun Directive in Dome/Kwabenya

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) directive for a rerun of the parliamentary election at a polling station in the Dome/Kwabenya constituency.

The move, announced on Saturday, December 28, has sparked a heated debate, with the NDC firmly opposing the decision, claiming that their candidate, Elikplim Akurugu, has already won the seat.

The call for a rerun stems from the absence of a pink sheet from the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 polling station. The pink sheet, which summarises the results for each polling station, is essential in the final declaration process.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the EC’s Director of Training, explained that results from 367 polling stations had been successfully collated, with three remaining. One of these results was rejected due to procedural errors, specifically the use of training sheets rather than the required official statement of poll forms. Following this, the two remaining results were added to the final tally.

However, the NDC disagrees with the EC’s decision, insisting that Akurugu had already secured a clear victory. Rashid Tanko Computer, the party’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, argued that with a margin of 1,154 votes in their favour, a rerun at a single polling station, which has a voter population of 689, would not alter the outcome.

“Taking out the result from that one polling station will not change the fact that Elikplim has won,” Tanko Computer stated. He also criticised the EC for alleged errors in its calculations and handling of the situation, reaffirming the NDC’s refusal to accept the rerun.
