Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have gathered outside the Electoral Commission’s Accra Regional Office, blocking roads with an electricity pole in protest over the delayed results for the contested Ablekuma North Constituency.
The demonstration followed a police decision to deny entry to the protestors, who were demanding the immediate declaration of the results for the closely fought race. Tensions have been high as both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) claim victory in the constituency.
The collation of ballots has been delayed due to disputes over the results. As of the previous day, 219 pink sheets had been consolidated, with 61 still outstanding. The Electoral Commission is reportedly using the pink sheets from both parties to finalize the tally after some official sheets went missing.
The delay has exacerbated tensions, with both parties accusing one another of irregularities. A heavy police presence has been deployed to maintain order at the regional collation centre.
The Electoral Commission has not yet confirmed when the final results will be announced, heightening uncertainty and frustration among the protesters.
