The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to petition the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, regarding an alleged plot to rig the upcoming elections in the Ashanti Region. The party claims that the scheme, purportedly directed by the government, involves Brigadier General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, and aims to disrupt the electoral process, beginning with the special voting exercise scheduled for December.
At a press briefing on November 19, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, emphasized the party’s intent to seek the Asantehene’s intervention to mitigate potential violence.
“We are going to ensure that the King of the Ashanti people, who is very much interested in the peace of our nation and the integrity of the electoral process, is made aware of these developments,” Gyamfi stated. “The headquarters of Brigadier General Opoku’s operations is in Kumasi, and we believe the Otumfuo values the peace enjoyed by the people of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region. We trust he will take an interest in this matter and address it accordingly.”
